Before becoming the richest man in the world and presidents of the United States, respectively, they at one point worked in hospitality, and according to their admission, they have learned valuable lessons that were crucial to their life and their success.
Barack Obama's first job was scooping ice cream at a Baskin-Robbins in Honolulu. In a LinkedIn article, Obama wrote: "My first summer job wasn't exactly glamorous, but it taught me some valuable lessons. Responsibility. Hard work. Balancing a job with friends, family, and school." Lessons that undoubtedly helped him in his career.
Jeff Bezos credits his time spent working at McDonald's with teaching him responsibility and introducing him to retail and customer service, which will become the core of his empire. Talk about lessons learned and how they can enrich your life. Bezos says, "You learn a lot as a teenager working at McDonald's, and it's different from what you learn in school. Don't underestimate the value of that!"
In his autobiography, Bill Clinton was a bartender in a cocktail lounge while studying. He was able to observe people, listen to their stories and better understand certain sectors of society. Great lessons that are crucial to any successful leader, let alone to a politician that has to win votes and lead a country so diverse as the United States.
Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, worked as a waiter at Pizza Hut while in high school after starting as a dishwasher. He says that is "where I learned basically everything I've ever needed to know about customer service."
Whether you work for a while or decide to make it a career, hospitality teaches you many skills and lessons useful in life and any other path you might pursue professionally.
