Thoughts on happiness

Whenever someone is asked what do they know for sure, the answer varies. Some people have a whole list filled with their beliefs and explanations drawn from their experience. Some people say that they do not know anything for sure because everything is changing. Some people say that the only things they know for sure are those that depend exclusively on them.

I thought many times about this, and there were many things in my life that I knew for sure, but alas, life showed me differently. We are constantly changing, and what we know today for sure, tomorrow might be completely different. Not knowing for sure some things is actually one of the keys to perpetual happiness. Not knowing something for sure enables us to not have expectations that might not be met. Not knowing things for sure enables us to adapt and make peace with whatever life throws our way, to constantly evolve and better ourselves.

The only thing I know for sure is that being happy is a choice. It is only up to you if you are happy or not, it does not depend on anyone else or what happens in your life.

Once you realise this, nothing can hinder your happiness anymore. Sure there are challenges and days when things could be better, but feeling happy or not is only your choice.

I have been through many things in my life so far, and there were moments when at least on paper, there really wasn't much to be happy about, and still, I felt happy. I remember that it might have been regarded as out of place to be happy in some of those moments, but I was nonetheless.

The only reasonable explanation that I can think of is that I have indeed decided to be happy no matter what, and I live by that choice every day. Let me tell you, it really feels great to do that, and it is more straightforward than it might sound.
